A partir de semanas después de que Hitler declarara la guerra a los Estados Unidos a mediados de diciembre de 1941 y hasta que la guerra con Alemania casi terminó, 73 submarinos alemanes atacaron de manera sostenible las aguas de Nueva Inglaterra, desde Montauk, Nueva York, hasta la punta de Nueva Escocia en el Cabo Sable. El quince por ciento de estos barcos fueron hundidos por contraataques aliados, cinco se rindieron en la región y tres fueron hundidos frente a Nueva Inglaterra, cerca de Block Island, la bahía de Massachusetts y frente a Nantucket.
