Durante su larga vida, Basil H. Liddell Hart fue considerado uno de los pensadores militares más destacados del mundo. En sus escritos, hizo hincapié en el movimiento, la flexibilidad y la sorpresa. Consideró que, en la mayoría de las campañas militares, era vital adoptar un enfoque indirecto. En lugar de atacar al enemigo de frente, se debe perturbar su equilibrio psicológico y físico. Con ejemplos clave de la Primera y la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el autor define los principios prácticos de la guerra: «Ajusta tu fin a tus medios», «Elige una línea de operaciones que ofrezca objetivos alternativos» y demuestra que son tan fundamentales en el mundo de la política y los negocios como en la guerra.
